Video games, comic books, professional wrestling, star wars and movie theaters. If you used to ask your father for these when you were a child but now you’re asking your kids, you might be a geek dad. Father’s Day is less than a week away and being one of those dads has inspired me to create a list of five ideas that may make him happy.
Gaming used to be for children but they have grown up and so have their games. Video games have evolved from 16-bit Super Mario Bros. to full on stories with high definition graphics. God of War is a prime example of this. Now FREE with a PS Plus subscription! Known for its amazing graphics and rich storytelling, it has set the bar for the action genre. Kratos should also receive a Father of the Year award. Click here for some of his best dad quotes. If he already has or has played this game then a brand new game might be warranted.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge digital copy releases June 16th, 2022. I don’t know a guy who was not a TMNT fan. Ninja Turtles games have hit some criticism over the years but fans of the original SNES model will be excited to know that this is a side scroller in the old school style. It comes in at a very affordable price of around $40 but the physical release slated for August 31, 2022 has multiple options. Some bundles are well over $600! IGN has a more detailed listing of what will be offered for the hardcore Turtle fan here. Shredder’s Revenge isn’t the only new Turtle story out there.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is a brand new comic set in the future. Including the original authors Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the comic is much darker than the hit 80’s cartoon. Without giving too much away, only one turtle remains. With the series still not complete, now is the best time to hop onboard. Amazon may be your best bet to find a copy as the original prints went fast as they were reserved only. Of course if younger kids are running around, dad may need a hardback cover of The Last Ronin. While comic surfing I stumbled upon another gem.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic. Yes, together, and with Green Ranger Shredder! Months ago I saw a picture of Shredder as the green power ranger and thought it was one of the coolest pictures ever. I just thought it was fan made but now I realize an actual comic exists. I am just going to post the link here and you can dare dad not to click it. The Shredder/ Green Ranger mask is the best. Another favorite of mine wears a mask, Pentagon Jr.

AAA Triplemania XXX part two is scheduled for June 18, 2022 on PPV. One of my favorite luchadores known by several names around the world but Pentagon Jr. in AAA will be competing in a Ruleta de la Muerte Semifinal match. The loser will advance to the finals later this year and failure to win there will result in them losing their mask forever! The card also had the Hardy Boys set to take on Dragon Lee and Dralistico in the main event. Now due to Jeff Hardy being arrested for his third DUI in ten years and facing a possible five years in prison, the main event is unknown. EWrestlingNews has an update on Jeff Hardy here. Now if your papa isn’t into the Lucha Libre then the wrestling world is offering another PPV live on Father’s Day.

Impact Slammiversary has a pretty good card with their new champion Josh Alexander defending against veteran Eric Young. Alexander actually won the title with his young son at ringside so this event has a real “root for my daddy” kind of feel. Check out the two minute clip here. If two wrestlers dueling it out is not geeky enough then what better than to follow one of the greatest duels, the “Duel of Fates.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi is now streaming on Disney Plus. It follows the story of Obi-Wan after the events of the battle that led to Anakin Skywalker becoming the Darth Vader as we know him. I have three boys and am still searching for which one will be my Star Wars kid. What better way to say Happy Father’s Day than to be that kid. Maybe even go one step further. Lightsaber battle!

I’m not saying go out and buy a state of the art lightsaber replica because remember if you’re a father with young kids, it will get broken. I recommend getting the cheapest, yet somewhat durable saber to have a dual. Wal-mart actually has a good deal on some right here. Not all kids are into swordplay but many like space stuff. Try bringing some nostalgia back by purchasing a ticket to the new Buzz Lightyear movie.

The first Toy Story came out in 1995 and I was ten years old then. I would have let my mind wander and imagine what my toys did when I was asleep. Woody and Buzz brought that to life and in a humorous way. Check out the trailer on Youtube here and in the theaters June 17, 2022. Let the kids know that dad was there on day one of the adventure. Revisiting Lightyear in theaters isn’t the only big screen experience for me.

Jurassic World Dominion is a theater specific experience. It is very personal to me and may be to other fathers. I was eight-years-old when my friend Robert and I felt the footsteps of the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex in our seats at the first Jurassic Park. It was so real. That was 4D for us back then. The loud roar could be heard in other parts of the theater. The original was released on June 11,1993 so how fitting it is for it to come out on June 10, 2022. Jurassic World is also special as it was my oldest son’s first time watching on the wide screen at Wellborne Cinema in Alvin, Texas. He was almost two and when they were about to be crushed in the glass globe he yelled out “oh dammit,” in front of everyone. I will never forget that.

Father’s Day is about making memories and not spending money. Whether it is reliving old memories in a new way or it is making new ones that your children may remember for the rest of their lives, the day should be memorable. Here’s to a Happy Father’s Day geek dads.
